the story of thomas elias.
the holidays were in full swing in caccamo, italy, lucia and benji spending their first christmas married with lucia’s family in sicily. the couple had planned to spend the entirety of december with her family before returning to the us and celebrating the new year with benji’s family. with their child expected at the end of january, they’d thought they’d really thought this through. particularly knowing that traveling after the baby was born would be harder, and lucia wanted to make sure she did she her family at home before she had to ask them to come to her. however, late in the evening on december 12th, lucia elias went into labor. as the baby was a month early, they’d rushed to the hospital, the entire ricci family. hands were clasped in prayer for several hours until at 2am on december 13, 1989, thomas mattia elias was born.despite the change in plans, the eilas’ stayed in italy. ultimately, benji has to go home at new years as planned however lucia stays back with her family and their son for another two weeks before following in suit and returning to their home in newark, new jersey. while in italy, the family affectionately calls him thomas, their accents thick with the pronunciation. but when he’s brought home, he is quickly nicknamed tommy. often ‘baby tommy’ by his older cousins who fight to to hold him, and tom-tom by his grandparents. while his mother continues to call him thomas for a while, her own italian accent coming through, ultimately it becomes more of a term of endearment than his name itself.tommy’s early childhood is filled with happiness and family, as both the elias’ and their extended family on his father’s side all live within the same block. all their aged houses close together and lined around each other, some across the street. despite their area not being the safest, it had always felt safe, surrounded by family. someone was always around, someone would see if anything was happening. if anyone was in danger. something that was very important to his rather paranoid grandfather, who had him, even at two, sitting on their porch watching over his cousins. while they were older than him, they were also all girls. as tommy was the first boy of their generation, he got some preferential treatment from older family members, but he also got some added pressure. however when he is nearly three, that pressure is lessoned slightly.on december 1sth, 1992, jackson elias is born. tommy is thrilled to have a little brother. even before jack can be much fun, tommy insists that he pulls him along. he holds his brother while he watches his cousins with his grandfather, and he shows him his assortment of hand me down toys. and as jack grows bigger, he quickly becomes his brother’s mini-me. the boys look very similar, the only stark difference being the vibrant green of jack’s eyes that contrast with the dark brown, nearly black of tommy’s.as tommy and jack grow, they don’t notice the struggles the adults discuss above them. they pay no mind to the looks on parents or aunts or uncles faces when they go to the store and they point out some new juice they want, or how closely they look at the prices. however, their older cousins do. jenna notices, as does sara. they tell the boys to stop asking for so much. the boys are confused, but they stop. or at least tommy does, because after all. he’s four. he understands.
it isn’t until tommy is five and he finds his mom sitting on the edge of the bathtub crying over an odd white stick that he is really worried. he asks her why she’s crying, and she tries to stop, and smiles at him. she tells him they’re happy tears and she holds him, bringing her onto his knee to show him the stick. she explains to him he’s going to be a big brother again. tommy doesn’t get it but he acts excited, and at merely five, learns to pretend to believe his mother’s lies as she still cries holding onto him a little too tightly.through lucia’s third pregnancy, the whole block is in influx. the kids and aunts and uncles helping benji and lucia move their family from their house into benji’s parents’ home. tommy is excited to spend more time with his grandfather, and doesn’t even mind that he has to share a room with his brother. he hears talk about how the new baby will need a room eventually. benji assure lucia that this is only temporary. they’ll get more space soon.they don’t get new space soon. late in her pregnancy, lucia finds herself begging her husband to let her ask her father for help. she assures him they won’t hold it against them. benji is too prideful. tommy sits outside their room, hearing this fight. hearing the same resolve enter his father’s tone that he heard when he asked him for one extra juice box but he said he had to save it for tomorrow.by the time lucy is born, tommy finds his dad sleeping on the couch most nights. one day he asks his cousins if their dad’s ever sleep on the couch. they say only when their mom’s are really angry. one day tommy asks his mom why she’s so angry at his dad, and he doesn’t note the exhaustion in her eyes. but that night he sees his dad go into their bedroom. he assumes they’re happy. at least baby lucy seems happy.both boys love their baby sister, and promise to protect her. but they don’t have her long before their cousins steal her away. declaring they need to take care of her because boys just don’t understand. the boys insist on being part of it, ending up being dressed up by their cousins as well, but they don’t mind. despite the chaos in their home, and the strain between their parents…they’re happy.
part 1: new jersey
...the preamble....
the time before loss.
tommy & jack are often found wearing their cousins clothes they've been dressed in and just walking back down the street to go home. some other kids laugh at them, some of their family members are upset by it, but they boys never cared much.
tommy continues to spend time with his grandfather, hearing stories from his past and learning of what his responsibilities are as a man in this family. he's often left confused with the disappointment that exists in regard to his father.
benji elias is often working, trying to make ends meet and help support the family. for a while he drives a cab until he ends up getting a job working private security across the city. this job pays better.
as time goes on, tommy notices his parents growing closer again. his mother smiles more, and their nuclear family spends more time together.
when tommy is seven, he begins playing soccer. both he and jack can entire the same league, and they fall in love with it. as does their dad. it becomes their thing.
tommy & jack can be found frequently practicing soccer in the small front yard of their grandparents house.
despite the promise that they'd move into their own home again soon, the family becomes comfortable at their grandparents. particularly after the death of his grandfather when tommy is 9, the house is quickly set as their home.
as time goes on, the elias family falls into normalcy. the kids go to school. tommy and jack keep playing soccer. tommy makes friends on the team and in school, he has his first crush and he discovers he really likes sciences class.while tommy makes friends at school, he rarely brings them home. school feels like the place for friends, but home always feels as though it is meant for family. he begins going to friend's houses for birthday parties and such, however very few of his own friends have ever been to his house. not out of shame, or embarrassment...but maybe in a little fear that his family wouldn't like his friends.tommy brings his best friend isaiah peters home for the first time after soccer practice one day, and he is immediately welcomed into the family. with his immediate offering to help his grandmother in the kitchen, tommy can't help but think she might like him more than she likes him. while he knows it isn't true, it feels that way.tommy and isaiah had met at soccer, and ultimately went to the same school. with their last names close in alphabetical order, they often found themselves sitting near each other and partnered together in projects. where tommy was studious and confident, isaiah was nervous, often overcompensating. he was the class clown and tommy loved ridding on his coat tails. whenever they talked and they were called out to see if they were listening, tommy always had the answer. after all. he was listening. he was just also doing other things.while his parents were annoyed by the commentary from teachers, they were happy to see their son so excited to go to school, and to have a friend. as time goes on, isaiah spends more and more time at the elias house. tommy never notices the bruises hidden under the sleeves of isaiah's shirts, or how he flinches at the volume in his home sometimes. however, as it grows worse, his mother notices. lucia asks him if isaiah had ever talked about his home life. tommy says no...but then he begins to ask.at first isaiah is reluctant, swearing everything is okay. he's angry at tommy for even asking and storms out. and he doesn't come over for a while. he ignores tommy in class, and doesn't sit with him at lunch. he won't pass to him in soccer...but it isn't until tommy begins to notice what his mom had seen. all because it's worse. he notices poorly hidden bruises and bags under the other's eyes, but it isn't until he comes to school with a poorly bandaged hand does tommy comfront him.the boys are twelve at the time when tommy catches isaiah in the bathroom. 'what happened to your hand?' tommy had asked, lost between his own worry and frustration. 'i fell,' is all isaiah says as he washes his hands.
'do you really expect me to believe that?' tommy asks, incredulous to think his best friend thinks he knows him this little.
'yeah, because it's the truth,' isaiah said before he faced him. but there was something in his eyes. something like a plead to push a little harder. to ask again. even just one more time. so that's what tommy id.
'z...' tommy said as he took a step closer to his friend, looking to the wrapped hand the other boy held to his chest. 'do you want my mom to look at it?' he offered, letting the subject of that be a secondary offer. isaiah agrees.that night, lucia ends up bringing isaiah to the emergency room. his hand having been broken. slammed in what the doctors thought was a car door. cps was called.isaiah had lived with both his parents, both of who were alcoholics. isaiah stayed with the elias', the police coming to question him. and he was placed in their temporary custody while the investigation was in place.at the time, neither boy knew about the threatening phone calls from isaiah's father. they didn't know he'd appeared drunkenly at the door in the middle of the night when the boys slept in tommy's room. just as the elias' didn't notice the way the boys held hands in the seclusion of the room.tommy told himself it was for comfort. that he was being a good friend. but he knew it was more. everything with isaiah had been more. it was why he alone was the friend he brought home. because he was close as family...but he wasn't quite family. tommy hadn't figured out that difference yet. and he wouldn't for a few more years, when isaiah was more of a memory than a companion.it was christmas eve, and isaiah was still with the elias'. the investigation pushing onto the second month, although it had been established it was not safe for him to go home. so he stayed with the elias family for the holiday. benjamin had been called in to work that evening, dressed in his security uniform as he kissed his family goodbye. he made them promise to not wait to open presents until he got home on christmas morning, and they reluctantly agreed.that evening, they watched movies, tommy and isaiah staying up a little later than lucy and jack. they played some video games and talked...until the game was interrupted by a wail.
benjamin elias was pronounced dead on the scene after being brutally assaulted by nathanial peters on the job.
part 2: maine
...the recovery....
the time we had.
after isaiah's father murdered benji elias, the family grieved. within three months of his death they'd moved to a small town in northern maine, new ivy.
isaiah had been moved into the custody of his aunt after his father was arrested. while tommy tried to stay in touch, it was hard to look at his best friend in the same way. knowing his father had killed his own. but it wasn't until that added grief of losing his best friend was piled on did he realize he'd begun to love him too.
lucia had packed up her kids to move to new ivy, where her sister had moved a few years prior. while she couldn't stay in her late husbands family home anymore, she couldn't imagine not having family around.
at first after they moved, it was difficult. the family trying to grieve and adjust to a new place. lucia had to find a job, opting to work at a local bed and breakfast that was a short walk from their new home. thanks to their aunt, they had a big enough home where they each had their own room for the first time.
while lucia was big on being able to support her kids on her own, she allowed her family to send her money. she finally took the offered help.. there was part of tommy that resented her for it, even though he also got to enjoy the benefits of it. however, his resentment doesn't last long. because he knows they needed it.
without his father, tommy takes on the role of the man in the house more fully despite only being 13. he takes initiative in helping with his siblings, making sure they do their homework. while his mom begins to work, he helps with her role too. picking up where he's needed. after all, it's easier than grieving.
when soccer season arrives he participates in that as well, and easily outshines many of the other players. it's quickly apparent this might be his way to ensure he can go to college.
while it took some time for the elias family to settle into new ivy, by the time tommy was in high school he had begun to build a new life for himself. his family was still his priority, but he takes his mom's comfort in their town as encouragement to expand his circle. he focuses on school and soccer, he dates and he makes friends.tommy has his first girlfriend when he's fifteen, named daisy zima. however they only date or a few months before he ends up breaking up with her. not because he doesn't like her, but because there ends up being a drunken kiss shared between him and a teammate on the varsity soccer team. it's a few weeks later before he ends up dating that teammate, charlie. while neiter were officially out, there were rumors.tommy and charlie are generally inseparable, and while there was some bullying at school their teammates were surprisingly cool about it. even as some of them caught on to the truth, they had no issue with it. particularly because they were the two best players on the team.tommy officially comes out to his family when he's sixteen. while his mom takes a moment, she's ultimately supportive. jack has a brief problem with it, unsure of why he feels the need. however, events to come prevent this from being long lasting.at sixteen, tommy is riding high. he's the best player on the varsity soccer team, and he's in a happy relationship. while he misses his dad, and he can hear the disapproval from his grandmother over the phone about his boyfriend, things are great. but everything changes one march afternoon.
lucy elias reported missing as of march 14, 2005. last seen walking home from school in a purple jacket.
when tommy arrives home from school that day, he finds his mother in a panic. his aunt trying to soothe her. both asking if he'd seen her on his way home... he hadn't. the entire family searches for her that night. the soccer team joins the search the following afternoon.it's weeks before the searches stop, and it's months before his mother will listen to the police. while they insist they're not giving up, tommy overhears them saying the case is cold.as tommy finishes high school, he watches his mom deteriorate. he watches her re-grieve the loss of her husband, and her try to not grieve her daughter. she makes them throw her a birthday party, and set her place at the table. she'll still bring home surprises for her. _just in case she comes home.tommy promises her that one day she will. because he'll find her. so when it comes time for college, he attends the university of southern maine on a soccer scholarship, and studies criminology.it's early in his college education that it is just reaffirmed for him that the police won't help. finding his sister will come down on him, just as caring for his cousins and his family fell on him.at the tail end of university, he gets licensed as a private investigator as well as a bounty hunter. because while he wants to find is sister foremost, he has bills to pay and people to support. and while he might struggle to find lucy, he can find another person.after graduation, tommy moves home and begins to work around maine before he ultimately begins to travel more fully. ultimately he moves to illinois as his home-base, giving him a better central location for national travel.
part 3: illinois

the time we have.
tommy moves to chicago and gets a small apartment at first, as he doesn't plan on staying in the city long. however as time goes on he ends up buying a flat rather than renting.
while tommy lives alone, when jack drops out of college he lets him stay at his apartment. after the loss of their dad, jack had alway struggled, but after the loss of lucy it all got worse. his grief pulled him into very harmful coping mechanisms, leading to him eventually lean on his brother.
tommy spends very little time in chicago, mostly traveling. he typically travels to places to follow a lead about lucy, and then funds this trip through a bounty or by offering his pi services
tommy ends to work mostly as a private investigator, however if finds himself finding bounty jobs particularly when he needs more cash fast.
while his license reads his fully name, he often goes by lu in honor of his sister.
tommy became a well known resource on the east coast and in the midwest where he typically spends the most of his time, however he begins to find some leads that may indicate whoever took his sister could have eventually made it as far as the west coast.
lucia frequently visits tommy and sometimes is surprised to find jack instead. however, she does periodically try to visit. particularly as tommy sends money back to her, attempting to help fund her life.
over the last decade, lucia has begun to waver slightly on the idea that her daughter might still be alive. it seems now that only hers ons believe in her.
currently tommy can be found traveling across the united states. frequently he is not using his own name, as he his utilizing facades to get information he needs for a current job or for his search for his sister. now in his 30s he continues to have the same dream that he had at 16. to find her.
where does he stay while traveling : dependent how long he is staying somewhere, he'll either do a motel if he's in a pinch, but he prefers to airbnb for longer runs of time.
where you can find him when he's traveling : bars and diners throught the us.
what does he do ? : you can find him running, reading files or on his laptop, taking notes, he can be people watching.
does he date ? not really, however he'll make a move or be receptive to a move at a bar.
